This Picture

On Sunday 19,April 2009 at 12.36pm using her Sony SLR 300 Digital SLR The Picture was taken by Sara Monk on the Route of the No 38 Bus which runs between Clapton Pond North East London to Victoria Station in the heart of London, via The streets of Islington Shaftesbury Avenue, Piccadilly Circus and Holborn, in the London Borough of Camden. The Picture was taken on the move, as we made our way home from a day’s shopping and culture. This seemingly unremarkable picture was selected from all the hundreds of pictures that Mrs Monk snaps almost randomly every single day. The city scene is dynamic in that people are on the move, crossing the road dodging traffic, and running to catch the bus. And even the photographer is featured herself moving and snapping paparazzi-like on unsuspecting Londoners Traffic congestion remains an endemic unresolved problem, in spite of Mayor Livingstone’s Congestion Charge. The number 38 runs every five minutes, however slowly, but nevertheless this timetable has been compiled with remarkable ambition and indeed precision. The poor man or woman that compiled this time table most have known that his or her task was futile, as he or she was compiling it. And then he or she would have been compelled to consider the other 500 other bus routes, and would have Reginald Perrin like nightmares about night buses, until that poor sole was committed, kicking and screaming. The number 38 may resonate not with where it is in this photograph, but where it has
